Mixed-Use Development for Community Growth
Project Overview
This project proposes the development of a mixed-use building in Salt Lake City, designed to address the city’s evolving demographic profile and pressing housing needs. Rooted in a vision of inclusivity, diversity, and sustainable urban growth, this development will serve as a catalytic model for how policy, planning, and design can come together to accommodate a vibrant, growing community.
Objectives
- Respond to Demographic Change: Create a building that reflects and supports the city’s growing diversity by incorporating a range of residential options for varying income levels and household types.
- Promote Housing Variety: Increase the diversity of housing types available within the city, including affordable and market-rate units, micro-apartments, family-oriented residences, and live-work spaces.
- Enable Policy Innovation: Align the project with ongoing policy reforms to demonstrate how flexible land-use codes and streamlined development processes can encourage efficient urban growth.
- Support Community Infrastructure: Incorporate commercial, retail, and public space to foster walkability, access to services, and economic opportunity within the neighbourhood.
Programmatic Elements
The proposed mixed-use building will include:
- Residential Units: A balanced mix of unit types and affordability levels to serve singles, families, and aging populations.
- Retail & Commercial Space: Ground-floor spaces to support local businesses, food services, or co-working offices.
- Community Amenities: Shared amenities such as green roofs, community rooms, bike storage, and outdoor gathering spaces.
- Transit Connectivity: Design elements that promote access to public transportation, including bike lanes, pedestrian pathways, and proximity to transit nodes.
