Our Mission
Urban Narratives engages proactively in creating contextually appropriate, sustainable design solutions within a dynamic and continually evolving environment. The studio’s work addresses new ways of understanding the often contradictory relationships between radically varying design scales.
There is an urgency for our built environment to re-establish healthy relationships with the natural world. Similarly, there is an urgency to address the Anthropocene’s unprecedented growth in India and globally and ensure it is regulated to happen sustainably and equitably.
Our work searches for the intricate balance between design in this context and the demands of our new world.

Shivani graduated from Sri Venkateshwara College of Architecture, Hyderabad, where she grew up. She interned at Vaid Architects’ guidance with a passion for sustainable design and exploring natural building materials. She further studied indigenous building, art & craft through her undergraduate thesis, Redesign of Monda Market. Her journey through various experiences at the firms she has worked at and observations from her travels have greatly inspired her to explore the purpose of design in everyday life. She joined Urban Narratives to take another step to further her interest in detailing and to explore hand-crafted and affordable housing solutions.

Aasiya Maaviah has completed her Masters in Architecture and Urban Design from Columbia University GSAPP in the City of New York. She has worked on several designs and research projects in India, Saudi Arabia, the United States of America, and Israel, emphasising on water-front developments and sustainable practices. She is always trying to find new ways to articulate innovative design and new design techniques to articulate changing ideologies. The excitement of knowing that proper design will help meet an individual’s requirements is the only sentiment she holds as her own. She is an Architect in Urban Narratives and hopes to further her design knowledge and continue making an impact.

Shanmukh is pursuing his Bachelor of Architecture at the Aurora Design Institute, Hyderabad. His academic background is defined by focusing on creating a physical expression of a community’s life in space and time which led him to complete his thesis on “The visual perception of a historical market”. As part of his curriculum, he joined Urban Narratives as an intern to further explore these ideas. Additionally, he hopes to learn the art of space making with a minimalist approach.

Kumar completed his Bachelors in Civil Engineering from Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Technology. Here, he established a strong belief in the significance of translating an architectural vision into reality. This belief helped him associate himself with practices that acknowledge the relationship between design thinking and the built environment. At Urban Narratives, he aspires to acquire practical knowledge in material manipulation, workers rights, and high-quality output.

Vaishnavi has a Diploma in Architecture from HKES Women’s Polytechnic and is pursuing her Bachelors in Architecture from RV of Architecture, Bangalore. She completed her thesis and research on a Retreat with rehabilitation program for local birds in Raichur, Karnataka. She is currently in her final year and has joined Urban Narratives to complete her professional training. Vaishnavi believes architecture is a maker of timelines; it designs the way people live, create and participate in culture. During her internship and her practice, she hopes to learn and develop her software and time-management skills and unlearn outmoded concepts and understand everything design has to offer.

Rahul is currently a student at the Aurora Design Institute, Hyderabad. He comes with considerable skills when making things with hands, such as drawings, models and other mediums. From the early years of his architectural education, he has developed a practice of closely looking at everyday things in the city and making constant notes through following up with artists, writers, activists and many similar disciplines, which inspired his final year thesis, “Dissolving Compounds” which involved breaking barriers and increasing accessibility by countering gatekeeping. His contextual response through material and craft of building has motivated him to start his Urban Narratives career.

Born and brought up in Madhya Pradesh, Shyam is currently pursuing his Bachelors in Architecture at the Aurora Design Institute, Hyderabad. After completing his final year thesis titled ‘Living space for migrant workers’ that deals with the challenges of building for a vulnerable community, he began his journey with Urban Narratives. He has worked on commercial, residential, landscape and community development projects and enjoyed designing and collaborating with different communities. His vision in all his projects is to reconnect people with their natural environment and each other. At Urban Narratives, he aims to perfect his people management skills.
